In an emotional tribute delivered Tuesday afternoon at the Hindu Crematorium in Lugogo, billionaire businessman Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia paid heartfelt homage to his late son, Rajiv Ruparelia, describing him as a vibrant, gifted, and compassionate soul whose presence lit up every space he entered.
Rajiv, 35, was cremated in a private ceremony attended by family, dignitaries, and hundreds of mourners following his tragic death in a high-speed car crash on the Entebbe Expressway in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Speaking through visible grief, Sudhir painted a picture of a son whose life overflowed with energy, empathy, and purpose.
“As a father, I carry the unimaginable pain of loss and immense pride of having raised a son like Rajiv,” he said.
“What I will always remember most is his vibrant energy—energy that could fill a room, light up a gathering, and spark inspiration in everyone he met.”
Sudhir remembered Rajiv as a fast learner and a gifted individual, not only in his business ventures but also in his creativity and social connections.
He described his son as someone who dazzled those around him with charisma, laughter, and warmth and who had a rare gift of making everyone feel seen and valued.
“But what truly defined Rajiv was his enormous heart,” Sudhir said.
“He was especially passionate about helping children from underprivileged backgrounds. Quietly, he supported their education—from primary school to university—providing resources, mentorship, and encouragement.”
Sudhir revealed that in the days since Rajiv’s passing, countless young people had come forward to share how his generosity transformed their lives. “That was who he was—someone who saw potential where others saw limitation,” he added.
Beyond his philanthropy, Rajiv was remembered as loyal, honest, and genuine—a dependable friend, brother, and leader who built lasting relationships across political, social, and business circles.
His love for motorsport, particularly rally driving, was well known, and Sudhir recounted how he once asked Rajiv to step away from the sport due to safety concerns.
“Though he eventually stepped back from racing, the sport always remained close to his heart,” he said.
In one of the most poignant moments of the speech, Sudhir shared cherished memories of Rajiv as a child—traveling together, going fishing on Lake Victoria, and the playful sight of a five-year-old Rajiv proudly carrying a tiny briefcase filled with chocolates into business meetings.
“Those moments, just the two of us, are the most precious memories I will carry with me for the rest of my life,” he said.
As the ceremony concluded, Sudhir left mourners with a powerful reflection: “He lit up our lives, helped those in need, and left behind a legacy of love, service, and hope. As we reflect on this beautiful light, let us remember the laughter we shared, the lessons he taught us, and the creative person he was.”
Rajiv’s death has left a deep void in Uganda’s business and philanthropic community. As managing director of the Ruparelia Group, he led several ventures and championed youth initiatives and sustainability.
His life, though cut short, continues to inspire the thousands who knew him—or were touched by his generosity—from boardrooms to classrooms across the country.
