Police have confirmed the arrest of Butambala County Member of Parliament, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, in connection with recent incidents of election-related violence in Butambala District.
In a statement issued on Wednesday morning, Katonga Region Police Spokesperson Lydia Tumushabe said Kivumbi is currently in police custody and will be produced in court in due course.
“The Uganda Police Force would like to confirm the arrest of the Butambala County legislator, Hon. Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi. He is currently in police custody and will be arraigned before court in due course,” Tumushabe said.
According to police, Kivumbi’s arrest stems from investigations into violent incidents that occurred during the January 15 parliamentary elections.
On polling day, seven people who were reportedly agents of Kivumbi were killed at his home as vote tallying was ongoing. Following the incident, Kivumbi publicly accused security forces of storming his residence and killing the victims.
Police, however, issued a contradictory account, stating that the deaths occurred during clashes involving a group it described as violent supporters who allegedly attacked a police station and a tally centre in the area.
The killings sparked widespread public debate and condemnation, with opposition figures and civil society groups demanding an independent investigation into the incident.
Kivumbi later lost the Butambala County parliamentary seat to journalist Eriasa Mukiibi.
Police have not yet disclosed the specific charges Kivumbi will face, saying investigations are still ongoing.
