Findings reveal why ambulance caught fire, killing patient and nurse

Findings show that an ambulance registration number UG 4191M attached to Bwera hospital yesterday caught fire the oxygen cylinder went off.
The incident happened at Kicucu village, Kicucu parish, Kisomoro sub-county in Bundibugyo district, along the Kasese- Fortportal road.
“From the few observations, the cause of fire was from an oxygen cylinder which was in the Ambulance serving a patient referred to Kirudu Hospital in Kampala from Kasese Hospital,” a police finding reads in part.
There were six occupants in the Ambulance.
Two people were burnt to death and beyond any recognition.
They are: Robert Asaba (patient), 52, a resident of Hamukungu Village, Kahendero Parish, Katwe Sub County in Kasese District and Peter Baluku, 41, an enrolled Nurse at Bwera Hospital.
The injured have been identified as Jane Kabarisa (Asaba’s sister), 42; Zamari Masereka (driver), 41; Garvin Bagaya Garvin (Asaba’s daughter), 25 and Donah Kabahuma Donah (Asaba’s relative), 27.
The Police note that by the time Fire and Rescue team arrived from Fort Portal, the ambulance was burnt beyond repair.
Victims were evacuated from the scene and transferred to Buhinga hospital for medical attention while bodies are at the same hospital for postmortem.
