Magistrate arrested, charged for stealing Shs 400 million compensation funds

The territorial police in West Nile Region and Nebbi district charged a Magistrate Grade 2, known as Kerican Peter Prosper, to court after an investigation found he allegedly converted cash amounting to Ugx 402 million that was meant for compensating his uncles and aunts for their land, to his own personal use.
It was established that during the month of January 2022, at Angal Lower Parish, Nyaravur Sub-County, in Nebbi district, the beneficiaries authorized him to receive their cash compensation through his bank account at Housing Finance, thinking he was a trustworthy person. The money was paid to the beneficiaries by the Ministry of Defense as compensation for land acquired by the UPDF in 2001.
Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga says the Police are continuing to look into what he did with the money.
“It is painful that those who hold sacred trust with the community instead yielded to the temptation of self-interest and wrongly assumed control over property that they were not entitled to. We strongly condemn such holders of trust who betray innocent civilians,” Enanga said.
