KIRA! Ransom: 2-year-old rescued after mother’s friend kidnaps him over Shs 150 million
The police have successfully arrested Kato Geofrey, who is alleged to have kidnapped 2-year-old Ayan Makanga on October 10, 2024. The child was taken after Kato tricked the mother, Nayakaisiki Fatumah, a resident of Kireka-Kamuli in Kira Municipality, into inviting him to her home under the pretense of discussing personal matters. Kato and Nayakaisiki know each other from their university days.
It is reported that while Nayakaisiki was preparing tea for the suspect, he fled the scene with the child. Later that evening, Geofrey sent a WhatsApp message to the mother, demanding a ransom of Shs150 million for the safe return of the child.
The parents immediately reported the matter to Kira Division Police, prompting a swift and thorough investigation led by a team from the Crime Intelligence Directorate.
Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) says that “Today, the suspect was apprehended in Kigarama Village, Kasanda District, and 2-year-old Ayan was safely recovered. The child was found in good health and has since been reunited with their parents.”
The suspect is currently in police custody and will be processed for arraignment in court, said Deputy KMP spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire.
“We commend the efforts of the task team for their diligent work in resolving this case, and we also acknowledge the parents for their prompt reporting of the incident, which significantly aided the rescue efforts,” said Owoyesigyire.
