UNRA: Karuma Bridge is open to light passenger vehicles
By Marvin Ocol
The roads body, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), has said that Karuma Bridge is open to light traffic, including passenger vehicles.
On May 3, 2024, UNRA said some elements of Karuma Bridge (the concrete deck) have detoriated, particularly on the Kampala approach lane. So, the authority said that the continued exposure of the bridge to the ever-increasing heavy traffic is likely to accelerate its degradation and serviceability if not addressed in time. UNRA used the opportunity to close the road to trucks, trailers, and buses on Monday, May 6, 2024. Alternative routes were provided.
In a post on X last night, UNRA Manager of Media Relations, Alan Ssempebwa, said the bridge is open to passenger vehicles carrying up to 28 passengers.
“The bridge is not completely closed to traffic, except for buses, lorries, and trailers—heavy goods vehicles,” said Ssempebwa.
